Student Accommodation

Student Flats/ Apartments

College students need to make sure that they have a safe and affordable place to live while they are in school or collage. At some colleges, the best place to live is in the dorms on campus. However, at other universities, many students live off-campus in student flats/ apartments. You need to make sure that you spend enough time looking around so that you can find the right place to live.
The cost of renting such an apartment can be steep, and many students find it difficult to find an affordable place to live. However, this does not mean that you should choose an apartment building in an unsafe neighbourhood or that is far away from campus. The money that you save will not be worth the added danger or travel time.
It is usually a good idea to spend some extra time looking for a place that is more conveniently located. This way, you never know what you will stumble upon. The more time you spend looking, the more likely you will be to find a great deal on a nice apartment that is not too far away from your classes.
Another way to save money on rent, of course, is to find some room mates. The more of you that there are sharing an apartment, the less each of you have to pay. This does not mean that you should try to pack five or six people into a two-bedroom apartment, but splitting the rent two or three ways can really save you a lot of money.
Depending on which college you attend, you may also be able to be reimbursed for some of the cost of renting a place to live. Since you will not be paying for room and board, the amount that you will have to pay each semester will be lower. You may even be able to qualify for a housing stipend that can be applied towards each month's rent.
Be sure to talk to the college to find out what its policies are. This way, you will not be missing out on any reimbursement that you should be receiving. You do not want to find out months later that you have been spending more than you really needed to.
There are a number of other things to keep in mind when you are looking at student flats/ apartments. For example, what sort of amenities are available? There is a wide range of places to live, from very bare-bones buildings that only offer the basics, to luxury buildings that offer a wide range of additional services and amenities.
Of course, the more that is available, the more you will have to pay for rent. Just because a particular building offers a ton of extra features does not mean that you should strain your resources to pay more than you can really afford. Figure out which features are really essential and which are not so that you can prioritise your decision-making.
These days, for example, having reliable Internet access is not really a luxury. Instead, it is virtually a requirement, especially for students who may have to do a lot of work online. At the very least, you need to choose a place to live that lets you set up a DSL account or use a cable modem. Many apartment buildings may even offer built-in Internet access to every tenant.
Some buildings that cater to the college crowd also provide private study rooms that can be reserved so that you can have a quiet place to go when you are preparing for an exam or writing a paper. There may also be a computer area that provides printers and Internet access as well.
For many college students, food is a primary concern. If you enjoy preparing your own meals, make sure that you rent an apartment that has a decent kitchen. You will need more than just the basics if you want to be able to cook healthy and delicious meals for yourself on a regular basis.
If you do not always want to cook for yourself, you should look for a place to live that is conveniently located near a number of local restaurants. There may even be a cafeteria or other place to eat right in the building itself. This option is becoming increasingly popular in many buildings that cater to college students.
Staying in shape is important when you are in college, but finding opportunities to exercise and work out can be difficult. Try to find a place to live that makes it easy to stay fit. There may be a gym located near the building, or the building might even provide its own fitness facilities.
For example, you could rent an apartment in a building that has a gym and a swimming pool. Finding a place to live that comes with a fitness centre makes it easy to get plenty of exercise. If you are feeling bored, all you need to do is go to the gym and get a good workout in.
Parking is another important feature to consider when you are looking at student flats/ apartments. If you have a car, you need to make sure that you have a secure place to park it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You do not necessarily want to just park it on the street all of the time, so finding a building that provides a reserved parking place is a good idea.
Of course, parking can be expensive, so take this cost into consideration as well. Some buildings may charge you extra for parking, while others provide it as a perk. If you do not have a car, you may even be able to rent your space to someone else, which can save you a lot of money over the course of a year.
Finding affordable student flats/ apartments near campus can be tricky. Keep these tips in mind so that you can find a great place to live that does not cost too much.
